How can the battery of a forklift be kept at a high power level?

In order to keep the battery of a forklift at a high power level, the following aspects can be taken into consideration:

Regular Charging and Avoiding Over-discharging

Regular charging: The forklift battery is a rechargeable one, so regular charging is essential. Generally speaking, when the battery power drops to around 80%, it needs to be charged. The charging time is usually 8 to 10 hours, and at the same time, attention should be paid to the appropriate adjustment of voltage and current during charging.

Avoiding over-discharging: Excessive use will lead to insufficient battery power and affect the performance of the forklift. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid excessive use and charge in a timely manner, and don't let the battery power drop too low. Generally, the controller of an electric forklift is equipped with an under-voltage protection function. When the power meter shows only one bar of power left, the power should be turned off and the battery should be charged as soon as possible to avoid over-discharging.

Avoiding Over-charging and Reasonable Storage

Avoiding over-charging: Over-charging will cause the precipitation of the battery electrolyte or electrolyte, which may lead to safety issues such as short circuits or battery explosions. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid over-charging and regularly test and adjust the charging voltage and current. Meanwhile, an intelligent multi-stage charger should be selected to prevent water loss caused by over-charging.

Reasonable storage: When the forklift is parked, be sure to turn off the power switch and disconnect the battery from the electrical system. This is to avoid the battery consuming power for no reason when parked and also to prevent accidents when the forklift is not in use. When the electric forklift is not used for a long time, the battery should be fully charged and put aside, and it should be charged once every 1 to 2 months.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance

Checking the battery status: Regularly check the operating status of the battery, including the battery power, charging status, electrode corrosion and pollution conditions, etc., and discover and solve problems in a timely manner.

Adding distilled water: During the charging and discharging process of the battery, the water in the electrolyte will gradually decrease due to electrolysis and evaporation, resulting in a drop in the electrolyte level. If it is not replenished in a timely manner, it will accelerate the sulfation speed of the battery plates and shorten the service life of the battery. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly check and replenish distilled water in a timely manner (drinking pure water cannot be used instead). The frequency of adding water depends on the battery usage and working temperature.

Other Precautions

Avoiding laying the battery horizontally: The inside of the battery is generally 22 - 28% dilute sulfuric acid. When the battery is placed upright, the electrolyte can submerge the plates with a little space left. If the battery is laid horizontally, part of the electrode plates will be exposed to the air, which is harmful to the battery. In addition, there is an exhaust port on the top of the battery that communicates with the outside world, and the electrolyte is likely to flow out when the battery is laid horizontally.

Controlling the charging temperature: Avoid charging at a temperature above 49 degrees Celsius.

Keeping the battery clean: The battery, the box and the surrounding area should be kept clean and dry to prevent the impact of dust and moisture on the battery.

In conclusion, by regularly charging, avoiding over-discharging and over-charging, regularly inspecting and maintaining, and paying attention to other related matters, the high power level of the forklift battery can be effectively maintained and its service life can be extended.
